Why we built it

Packaged food has a label. Your dinner doesn’t.

Most of what we eat is cooked at home: a curry for the family, a pot of daal, overnight oats, a meal-prep bowl for the week. None of it comes with a nutrition label, so it’s hard to know how many calories or how much protein is on the plate.

Working it out by hand means looking up every ingredient, converting cups and spoons into grams, adding everything up and dividing by the number of servings. It takes time, and it’s easy to get wrong.

SmartNutrition does that work for you. You enter what went into the pot, and the calculator turns it into a clear report you can read at a glance, whether you’re tracking macros, planning meals or simply curious.

  • Macro breakdown

A chart shows how your calories split between protein, carbs and fat, with a table of what each ingredient contributes.

  • Your own ingredients

Add a product from its nutrition label, per 100 g, and use it in any recipe. It stays saved in your browser.

How we calculate

Simple maths, shown in the open

There’s no hidden formula. Every result follows the same four steps.

  1. Convert to gramsGrams, kilograms, ounces and pounds convert exactly. Cups, spoons and pieces use an average weight for that specific ingredient.
  2. Apply the ingredient’s dataEach ingredient stores its nutrition per 100 g, based on USDA FoodData Central reference values.
  3. Add everything upThe nutrients from every ingredient are added to give the total for the whole recipe.
  4. Divide by servingsThe total is divided by your number of servings. Changing servings never changes the recipe total.

Worked example

300 g chicken breast × 120 kcal ÷ 100360 kcal
150 g uncooked rice × 365 kcal ÷ 100547.5 kcal
1 tbsp olive oil (13.5 g) × 884 kcal ÷ 100119.3 kcal
Recipe total1,026.8 kcal
Per serving (÷ 2)513.4 kcal

Values per 100 g: raw chicken breast 120 kcal, uncooked white rice 365 kcal, olive oil 884 kcal.

A note on accuracy

SmartNutrition gives estimates. Real foods vary by brand, variety, ripeness and cooking method, and cup or spoon measurements use average weights. For the most reliable results, weigh your ingredients in grams. Our information is for general guidance and isn’t medical advice.
