The key points

  • Information only

    Everything on this site is general information, not medical advice.

  • Ask a professional

    Talk to a doctor or registered dietitian before changing your diet.

  • Results are estimates

    Real foods vary, so every number is an approximation.

  • Emergencies

    If you feel unwell, contact a doctor or local emergency services.

General information only

The content on smartnutrition.site, including the recipe nutrition calculator, its results, charts, articles and other material, is provided for general information and educational purposes only. It is meant to help you understand the approximate nutritional content of food you cook.

Not professional advice

SmartNutrition is not a medical service, and nothing on the website is medical, nutritional or dietary advice. It is not a substitute for advice, diagnosis or treatment from a doctor, registered dietitian or other qualified health professional.

  • Always ask a qualified professional about any questions you have regarding a medical condition, your diet or your nutritional needs.
  • Never ignore professional advice, or delay seeking it, because of something you read or calculated on this website.
  • Don’t stop or change any medication or prescribed diet based on information from this website.

Who should seek advice first

Please speak to a doctor or registered dietitian before making changes to your diet, calorie intake or macronutrient balance if you:

  • are pregnant, trying to become pregnant or breastfeeding;
  • are under 18, or are planning meals for a child;
  • have diabetes, heart, kidney or liver disease, high blood pressure or another medical condition;
  • have a food allergy, intolerance or coeliac disease;
  • take regular medication;
  • have, or have had, an eating disorder;
  • are planning a significant change in weight or a very low-calorie diet.

Estimates and data limits

Our results are calculated from average reference values per 100 g for each ingredient, mainly based on USDA FoodData Central. Every result is an estimate, because:

  • foods vary by brand, variety, growing conditions, ripeness and storage;
  • cooking methods such as frying, boiling or baking change weight, water and fat content;
  • cup, spoon and piece measurements are converted using average weights;
  • custom ingredients use the values you enter, which we don’t check.

For packaged foods, the nutrition label on the product is the more reliable source. Weighing ingredients in grams gives the most accurate calculator results.

Everyone’s needs are different

The right amount of calories, protein, carbohydrates, fat, sugar and sodium depends on your age, sex, body size, activity level, health and goals. Percent Daily Values shown on our nutrition panel are based on a general 2,000-calorie reference diet and may not match your own needs.

Allergies and food safety

SmartNutrition does not track allergens, gluten, additives or cross-contamination, and our ingredient names are not a guarantee of what a product contains. If you or anyone you cook for has an allergy or intolerance, always check product labels and follow safe food handling and cooking practices.

Healthy relationship with food

Tracking food can be helpful, but it isn’t right for everyone. If counting calories or nutrients causes you stress, guilt or anxiety, or you’re worried about your eating, please reach out to your doctor or a qualified mental health professional for support.

No professional relationship

Using this website, or contacting us by email, does not create a doctor-patient, dietitian-client or any other professional relationship between you and SmartNutrition. We can’t answer personal medical questions.

Your responsibility

Any decision you make based on information from this website is your own responsibility. To the fullest extent the law allows, SmartNutrition is not liable for any loss, injury or harm arising from the use of the website or its results. Please also read our Terms and Conditions and Privacy Policy.

Medical emergencies

If you think you may be having a medical emergency, such as a severe allergic reaction, contact your doctor or your local emergency number immediately. Do not rely on this website in an emergency.
